Wondering on a Wednesday

I am sure you can imagine my surprise when I discovered the eggs at the grocery store on the cereal isle and the milk mixed in with the juice.

Hmmm....

Since eggs, milk, and cheese are not stored in the refrigerator at the grocery store, do they need to be refrigerated at your house?

It there something different about the eggs, milk, and cheese over here that they do not require refrigeration?

I don't think I drank milk the entire time I was there. Although some of my braver American roommates would buy it and put it in the refrigerator. I don't remember the eggs not being refrigerated in Belgium though because I know I ate those a couple of times....good luck with this one.

THAT'S JUST PLAIN DISTURBING! I THINK I'D ONLY EAT FRESH FRUIT, BOXED, AND CANNED FOOD FOR FEAR OF SOME SCARY "ISM"! THANKS FOR VISITING MY BLOG!

Check to see if the milk is UHT (Ultra High Temperature) pasteurized. That particular type of milk doesn't need to be refrigerated until opened.
wikipedia link on UHT

I have no idea about the other stuff

Eggs do not need to be refrigerated. They can last for weeks on the counter (learned this last semester in my fantastic animal science class). You'll know a bad egg from a good one from far away--it'll smell horrid and probably be black or green on the inside! The only thing the refrigeration does is keep the quality grade up (which is determined by the air cell size in the egg)

Miss you!

You actually can buy milk in Europe which will NOT spoil within days in your fridge!

But it is UHT. And fresh eggs don't need to be in the fridge.

Food is safe, there are as strict rules as in the States. lol

But I love your picture.

I saw you on the SITS site, and I;m glad I did! We are also living in Europe (Germany), and like to travel on the weekends. We LOVED Switzerland! We went a year ago this week! I look forward to checking back!

I know that the eggs are okay. They have shelf milk in the caribbean that is stable at room temperature until it is opened. Check it out. Visiting from SITS.

Stopping by from SITS and want to say congrats to being saucy.

The milk in Germany wasn't refrigerated at the store either, it was pasteurized at a really high temperature and eggs can keep at room temperature for weeks like others have said.

We lived in australia for a year and I remember going to the grocery store was so exhausting...just the sensory overload. You lose your "filter", suddenly all 26 brands of soap jump out at you equally, how to choose?
